Care to write? Advice from Stephen King.
For some of us writing is not just a necessity, it is a creative outlet where the soul finds its retreat.
For others, like Stephen King, it was a means to live. The person, whose books we keep rereading and making movies out of, must have a lot to say about writing, and he does so in his iconic book “On writing”. There he gives us an insight into his life and several suggestions on how to make your expressions more and more enchanting with every new page:
Master The Fundamentals
According to King, “Writing is a constructed thinking”. It should be clear, and grammatically correct. One of the books he suggests to check on that matter is “The elements of style”.
Form A Daily Writing Habit
Routines are very good for creative people. Actually, they are good for everyone. A little self-imprisonment in from of daily target of words to write will get you to practice your writing no matter the weather, forcing you forward into undiscovered depths of your creative capacity.
Read A Lot
Stephen said, “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have time (or the tools) to write”. The benefits of exposing yourself to some good writing are plenty. From learning about different styles, to determining the quality of the written word, you will enrich your toolbox of writing.
Get Used To Rejection
The author talks about having a nail in the wall with all his rejected works. He had to change that nail for something bigger eventually, because of the amount of rejections for publishing. This is a common story for a lot of successful writers we adore today (J.K. Rowling, anyone?). Rejection is a necessary part of any challenging endeavor, so if not embrace it, then learn to not get discouraged by it.
Good luck in your creative endeavors!
